Vector or raster for DTF: what each format settles and what it does not
The two formats fail in opposite directions. A raster file carries a fixed number of observations, so the question is always whether there are enough of them for the width ordered. A vector carries instructions instead, so that question does not arise — and a different one does, about how faithfully those instructions describe artwork that was never drawn as shapes.

A vector is not a higher quality raster
It is a different kind of statement. A raster says what colour each sampled point was; a vector says where the boundaries are and what fills them. Neither is a superset of the other, which is why converting in either direction is a translation with losses rather than an upgrade.
What tracing actually does to a damaged file
It follows the boundary it can see, and a compressed or soft file has boundaries that are partly artifact. The result is a set of curves that reproduce the damage faithfully at any size.
- Compression ringing becomes a permanent wobble in the outline
- Anti-aliased edges become extra intermediate shapes
- A high node count usually means the tracer was following noise
When asking for the vector is the whole answer
If the artwork began life in a drawing tool — most logos did — then a vector exists somewhere, and requesting it removes the resolution question entirely. It is worth asking twice, because customers frequently do not know that the file their designer sent is a raster export of one.

- Is a PDF a vector?
- Sometimes. A PDF is a container, and it can hold real curves or a single placed photograph. The extension does not settle it.
- Should every logo be traced before printing?
- No. Tracing a clean raster that already clears the threshold adds a translation step and its own errors for no gain.
- Does a traced file need the same size checks?
- The resolution check no longer applies, but the physical ones do: stroke widths and type heights still have to survive on fabric.
